Ramadan is a holy month of fasting , introspection and prayer and is held on the ninth month of the 12-month Islamic calendar which is a lunar calendar. This year’s Ramadan began on May 17 and ended on June 14. Each day during Ramadan, Muslims do not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. The daily fast is broken with a meal known as “iftar.” Iftars are often elaborate feasts celebrated with family and friends.
Houston Sister Cities Abu Dhabi, Baku, Bashra, Istanbul and Karachi along with the Islamic Society of Greater Houston and all other collaborating organizations recently hosted the "Houston Iftar"—an Annual Ramadan Dinner with the Houston City Mayor, Sylvester Turner, as keynote speaker.
This year’s Houston Iftar, which attracted 1700 people, was held at the Bayou City Event Center. Also in attendance were members of Houston’s Consular Corps headed by Sultan Angari, Consul General of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Houston’s Sister Cities, the Houston City Council, US Congressman Al Green and Congresswoman Shiela Jackson. The Filipino American community was ably represented by the Board of Directors of the Filipino American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston (FACCGH) headed by its President, Mr. Loloy Reyes.
